Three years of trials on mineral fertilization of durum wheat in "Tavoliere di Puglia" environment was performed. The objective was to ascertain if the new varieties released at the half of the seventies, with shorter stem and resistant to pathogens, and therefore potentially able to profit by high doses of nitrogen fertilizer more than traditional grown varieties (Capeiti 8, Appulo and for some aspects Isa 1), give the same positive answer in Capitanata also, which is an environment drastically different from that where these novelties were bred. Besides, the effective need of phosphorus and potassium in relation to the increasing doses of nitrogen and to the soil availability. Other aims were to obtain the nitrogen uptake curve, as well to achieve data on the cooking quality of the different varieties in respect to the different combination of fertilizers considered in the research. The result of the third year of trials, for what is concerning the agronomic aspects, are here reported; these results confirm those of the first and of the second year, and therefore they have to be considered as conclusive. The new varieties don't answer as expected to the increasing doses of nitrogen; in fact, for each equal dose, these novelties give a yield lower than that of the traditional ones. It seems justifiable to consider that this behaviour represent another symptom of the insufficient adaptability of these new varieties to the eco-agrologycal system "Tavoliere di Puglia". At the highest dose of nitrogen (180 kg/ha) there is not significant increase of yield both for the traditional and for the new varieties. Phosphorus and potassium don't induce any increase of the yield. The results obtained for all examined agro-physiological and qualitative characters are discussed also, as well as the achieved knowledge for what is concerning the best doses for mineral fertilization of durum wheat in Capitanata.
