Given the importance of eggplant to Philippine Agriculture, it becomes imperative to study to improve the efficiency and productivity of this sub-sector. The lecture investigates factors affecting the technical efficiency and productivity among eggplant farmers in the three major producing provinces of the Philippines using the Stochastic Frontier Production Function Analysis. The results of the analysis revealed that labor elasticity was the highest and pesticide was lowest. The results also showed that labor, pesticides and fertilizer are the major determinants of productivity among eggplant farms in the selected provinces of the Philippines. The lecture indicates that increasing the amount of labor, pesticides and fertilizer would increase eggplant productivity. Among the variables that influence efficiency are distance of farm from input supplier, age of the farmer and number of trainings attended. The predicted mean farm specific technical efficiency (TE) was 51.43 percent implying that there is a scope of increasing output by 49 percent without additional inputs. The lecture further suggests the need to organize eggplant farmers into clusters to encourage them ti invest more inputs to eggplant production. The increase in inputs utilization can only be attained if credit support will be provided to the farmers through the cluster. Development of more farm-to-market roads would help eggplant farmers increase the level of input utilization.
