This paper discuses the importance and role of the crops postharvest sub-sector in the development of the Philippine agriculture sector and its potential impact on the country's economic sustainability. It presents the past and present trends, the various local and global factors affecting, and the various events that provided the impetus for the evolution of the said sector. Specifically, the paper lays down the contributions of the UPLB-Postharvest Horticulture Training and Research Center (UPLB-PHTRC) through the years, in developing and strengthening the academic and R and D programs of the UPLB College of Agriculture. The paper proceeds with identifying the relevant developments in UPLBCA's postharvest education, research, development and extension, as well as governance, particularly that of PHTRC. With these, the future role of the PHTRC and the strengthened academic program offerings of the UPLBCA's postharvest science were then outlined.
