Relationship between leaf nitrogen concentration and fruit yield of durian(Durio zibethinus Murr.)

Six rates of nitrogen (N), 0, 1.31, 1.96, 2.63, 3.28, 3.93 kg per tree/yr, were applied to 15-year old durian cv. Chanee grown in silty loam soil. Uniform amount of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were applied to all trees at the rate of 2.31 kg P per tree/yr and 2.74 kg K per tree/yr. Second and third durian leaves from the terminal of the first flush after harvest were sampled at 2-month intervals. Leaf N concentration was analyzed during the 2005-2006 growing season. Yield was determined and compared with leaf N. Seasonal variations in leaf N was more associated with leaf age than applied N. Leaf N initially increased at vegetative stage and declined at reproduction stage. Leaf N was low at fruit development stage. Flowering stage was selected as the best time to sample leaves. Applied N at varying levels did not affect yield. About 86% of the yield variations is explained by differences in leaf N. The optimum range of leaf N concentration at 90% maximum yield was 2.22-2.35% during flowering.
