Preliminary studies on the accumulation of heavy metals of cattle in the region of Castilla y León, Spain

Some heavy elements such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) assume a major impact on the public opinion as these elements are reflected in the environmental pollution. In most cases they do not play any biological role and its presence in the tissues of living beings is due to a cause-effect relationship, a result of their exposure in an environment related to the source of contamination. Food safety, watched over at regional, national and European levels, wanted to make public the information concerning potential effects caused by heavy metals and essential metals in health of human and animal; as well as the possible differences depending on the production system. Therefore it has been carried out for the first time the determination levels of four heavy metals, Pb, Cd, Hg and As, in blood samples, as an available antermortem biospecimen, in cattle herds in the Community of Castilla y León, one of the largest and most stocking densities of Spain. According to the results obtained and the concentrations allowed by law for these elements, none of the concentrations of heavy metals found would constitute any human health risk.
