Relations between the chemical composition of Picea abies needles and twigs and their position in the crown

The results on the variability of the of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Si, Al concentrations, the contents of mineral admixtures and ashy elements, and the calorific capacity for needles and branches of Scots pine (Picea abies L.) taking into account their position in the crown are presented (35-year-old pine plantations, Moscow region). Based on the data obtained using the multivariate analysis, indices for the variability of the element concentration and their role in functioning of the assimilative apparatus were established. The maximal variation was found for the N and K concentrations in the spruce twig increment showing the activity of the organic matter synthesis. The minimal variation was characteristic of the Ca and Si contents in the young twigs. In old spruce branches, their high concentrations reflect the physiological aging of needles. The boundary distinguishing the needles and twigs of the annual increment from the older fractions in clusters are N, R, K, and S concentrations that are higher for N by 20% in the needles (13% for twigs), 10 (24) for P, and by 15 (47) for K and are lower by 25% (37%) for S.
