The effects of the organic matter and clay as the most important soil sorption component on pendimethalin retention in this matrix were studied. Three soil types (pseudogley, chernozem and rendzina) with different clay and organic matter contents were used. Soil sample preparation was performed using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) method, while gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was used for pendimethalin detection and quantification in prepared soil extracts. The results obtained indicate that soils with different physico-chemical properties have different effects on the pendimethalin adsorption at its higher concentration levels, and that retention of pendimethalin in soil is primarily determined by the organic matter content in this medium.
