This paper examined the applicability of sediment aeration to reduce its volume to reduce the costs of dredging. Aerobic treatment was performed on Grand Backa canal sediments characterized by high metals content, i.e. under the Dutch classification system; the sediment is classified for all metals as extremely polluted and therefore require remediation (Class 4, 4+). The influence of aeration on the mobility of metals as a result of disturbing the physical-chemical equilibrium in the sediment/water system was therefore investigated. During aeration, the volume reduction in the sediment solid phase was 6 % after 56 days of treatment. The percentage of leached metals from sediments into the water is low (less than 1%) and indicates the possibility of using aeration as an in-situ remediation technology.
