Research on improving bioethanol production has been accelerating for both ecological and economical reasons, primarily for its use as an alternative to petroleum based fuels. Currently, in Vojvodina bioethanol is used in food, pharmaceutical and chemical industry and still some quantities must be imported, even though there is no utilization of bioethanol as motor fuel. There is variety of raw materials that can be used in the bioethanol production such as sugar beet, wheat, corn, potato etc. In the same time there is around 100,000 hectares of so called marginal fields that can be used for crops intended for bioethanol production. Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant organic raw material and that is reason why a wide variety of processes for the production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic materials has been studied and is currently under development. Extended production of bioethanol as well as its application as fuel is way to reduce energy dependence from imported oil as well as reduce environmental impact. Another positive effect of increased bioethanol production would be revitalizing of rural communities. The aim of this article is to investigate potential for bioethanol production in Vojvodina. Considering existing agricultural potential in the province possibilities for production of bioethanol are promising.
