The collection of medicinal and aromatic plants has begun to be formed since here 2003. In the Gene Bank of Slovakia there are collected and preserved 256 accessions of medicinal and aromatic plants in the active collection and 30 in the basic collection. All the genotypes were previously evaluated per Descriptor from the point of view of morphological, biological and yield data. All measured data are returned in passport and description database. In this work we examined morphological parameters and determined the quality of essential oil and the content of selected secondary metabolites of Thymus species. Altogether we investigated 25 samples originated from Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany. Plants were cultivated in Gene Bank of Plant Production Research Centre in Piešťany. Essential oil was isolated using very common method of steam distillation and the constituents of essential oil were analyzed using GC MS. The total content of total hydroxycinnamic derivatives was determined using spectrophotometric methods of Slovak Pharmacopoeia 1st edition. Recorded differences pointed to high chemical diversity and underline the importance of all external factors influence the quality as well as the quantity of active compounds in herbal drugs.
