Milk thistle (Silybum marianum [L] Gaertn.) is a medicinal plant, which could be planted as cultural crop on arable land. Every cultural crop on arable land, also S. marianum, is suppressed by abiotic and biotic factors of the environment. In this study we have focused on the evaiution of weed infestation of S. marianum canopies, as one of the main biotic environmental stress factor, by its cropping in the EXBA D. Malanta in the years 2008-2010. The most dangerous weeds, which infested S. marianum stands during the growth period, were Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Echinochloa cms galli (L.) P. Beauv. with desities 28 and 18 plants per square m, respectively. Perennial weed species were present in not high count but they were also important, because they infested stubbles after milk thistle harvest. With count around 2-3 plants per square m they were Cirsium arvense L. Scop, and Convolvulus arvensis L. With effective herbicide regulation we could suppress these weed species and positively influenced the quality of Silybum marianum drug.
