The work presents the methodology of the development of mean height-diameter functions based on Wolf's height-diameter model and derived for 45 tree species. The data come from the database of the National Forest Inventory and Monitoring of the Slovak Republic (NIML SR) performed during 2005 and 2006 as a representative sampling method. For tree species Fagus sylvatica, 14 mean height-diameter curves were derived for 14 climatic-site strata, which are determined on the base of the two main ecological variables: mean air temperature in vegetation season (from April to September), and mean precipitation sum in vegetation season (from April to September) taken from the rectified climatic rasters. The relationship between parameter a of height-diameter curve and site-climatic variables is non-linear and close at a global level. Parameter a primarily affects the asymptote of the height-diameter curve and is closely coupled to the influence of climatic and site factors. Its value decreases with increasing temperature until the inflexion point at temperature 15.67 °C, after which it begins to rise again. By implementing the height-diameter model into the growth simulator SIBYLA, its sensitivity to ecological conditions will be maintained and ensured in tree height estimation of new trees generated by the model of natural regeneration.
