Annual World Bank conference on development in Latin American and the Caribbean 1998 : banks and capital markets

This report deals with the Annual World Bank Conference on Development in Latin American and the Caribbean, held in San Salvador, El Salvador, in 1998. Opening remarks by Shahid Javed Burki were followed by speeches on globalization and the role of the financial system in development. Papers presented at the meeting, and included in this volume with commentary, touched on financial structure and the legal and institutional infrastructure for financial markets. Specific paper topics were: implications and determinants of the structure of banks and markets; the role of banks in capital markets' functioning and development; capital movement liberalization and its effects on financial systems; capital markets and legal institutions; experiences in banking crises resolution; institutional investors and securities markets; and the structure of financial regulation. Two roundtables occurred, dealing with the impact of foreign banks and competition between banks and non-banks, and lessons from the east Asian crisis.
