School feeding programs : improving effectiveness and increasing the benefit to education - a guide for program managers

The environment in which school feeding programs (SFPs)operate today, is quite different than even a decade ago, and significantly different from several decades ago, when many of the SFPs were initiated. Given the dwindling food resources, the use of public sector resources for feeding programs is being more carefully scrutinized. Against this backdrop of limited resources, the gains in child survival points directly at the required attention of the school-age group. Within this context, the role of SFPs is being viewed increasingly as part of an effective package of interventions, that address the nutrition, and health needs of school-age children. This guide is designed to assist in the process of creating SFPs, or seeking to improve the effectiveness of on-going ones, and includes: a brief rationale for addressing nutrition, and health in school children; a summary of the potential benefits of SFPs for education; and, seven recommendations for building effective SFPs, as an integral part of a package of nutrition, and health interventions for school-age children.
