Brazil - National Biodiversity and Brazilian Biodiversity Fund Projects

The main objective of the National Biodiversity Project is to assist the government to initiate a program for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversty by identifying priority actions; simulating the development of sub-projects through the facilitation of partnerships between the public and private sectors; and disseminating biodiversity information. The project will include the following components: 1) biodiversity assessments and dissemination, which will include a biodiversity information network; 2) model biodiversity sub-projects; and 3) project administration. The main objective of the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (FUNBIO) Project is to provide long-term and sustainable use of biological diversity in Brazil. The project will have two major components: 1) strengthening and operational support of FUNBIO, which will include operational costs, development of a cost-recovery and fund-raising program, and special studies to strengthen FUNBIO; and 2) grants program that will finance FUNBIO sub-projects. The sub-projects will be selected on a competitive basis according to established criteria. The nature of the sub-projects will include the following four broad areas: (a) biodiversity conservation; (b) sustainable use of biodiversity; (c) policy analysis; and (d) applied research and technology development.
