Indonesia - Natural gas development planning study

Indonesia is endowed with large and diverse energy resources including crude oil, natural gas, coal, hydropower and geothermal power. In the early 1980s, most of the country's exports and the government's revenues came from oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Following the collapse of oil prices in the first half of the 1980s, Indonesia began a series of fundamental reforms to restructure the economy, and incentives were provided for non-oil/LNG manufacturing and non-oil/LNG exports. Consequently, non-oil/LNG real gross domestic product grew faster than the oil/LNG sector. However the oil and LNG sector still retain a fundamental role in Indonesia's economy. This study is divided into six parts: the first gives an overview of Indonesia's energy sector, the second looks specifically at the gas sector, the third presents gas supply systems and gas reserves, the fourth looks at natural gas utilization, the fifth discusses policy and institutional issues, and finally the sixth gives strategies for the expanded domestic use of gas.
