Brucella melitensis infestions in the Federal Republic of Germany and Berlin (West): current situation report

The measures to control brucellosis in sheep and goats implemented in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1954 have steadily reduced the incidence of B. melitensis outbreaks. After 1966, the number of new outbreaks was almost zero. In the years of 1969, 1972 to 1975 and 1978, no outbreaks of B. melitensis infections occurred. New outbreaks happened in 1976 and 1977 in the border areas of the Palatinate and in Frisia due to the importation of B. melitensis-positive animals. A similar causality was found for the locally restricted new outbreak in the southern part of the Land of Niedersachsen in 1981/82. Due to the intensified control the tendency of the number of new outbreaks has been rapidly declining since 1983. In 1984, one positive case has been reported until May
