Since the 1960's, world agricultural trade has fared poorly compared with total world trade and especially compared with merchandise trade. Agricultural exports, which account for about 60 and 40 percent of total exports from the Caribbean and Pacific islands, respectively, have shown little growth in the 1980's. The Caribbean is a major supplier of sugar to world markets, providing over 50 percent of world exports in 1986. However, sugar, a major export commodity for both regions, has been particularly hard-hit by declining prices and reduced market access. The Caribbean supplies over 10 percent of world banana exports and is increasing its market share of other fruits and vegetables. The Pacific islands account for about 10 percent of world coconut and products exports, and about 2 percent of world palm nuts/oil and cocoa exports. The Caribbean and Pacific islands combined accounted for about 2 percent of world agricultural exports (including fish and forestry products) in 1986, compared with over 3 percent a decade ago. Major markets for the two regions' exports are the Soviet Union and the European Community, reflecting political ties through the Cuban-USSR sugar arrangements for Caribbean trade and through the Lome Convention for Pacific trade
