One technology developed for potential use in the disposal of RD (2,2'-dichlorodiethyl sulfide) from the Aberdeen Proving Ground unitary chemical stockpile is hydrolysis followed by biodegradation. Stockpile RD (89.2% pure) was hydrolyzed in 90 deg C water at a concentration of 3.8 wt %. The reaction was complete (RD undetectable at 200 ppb level), and the product typically contained 90-95% thiodiglycol. The complete product was amended with 1.5 g/L NH4Cl, 0.28 g/L KH2PO4 and trace mineral salts and fed to aerobic sequencing batch reactors, seeded with activated sludge. The efficiency of carbon removal in the bioreactors was typically >90 %, and the effluent was nontoxic as determined by aquatic toxicity tests.
