This report documents the controlling effects of light field geometry and internal radiant emission on the apparent optical properties used to construct simplified optical inversion algorithms for Case 1 waters. Monte Carlo simulations utilizing the accepted physical properties of the water molecule and suspended matter are utilized to solve the Radiative Transfer Equation and generate apparent optical properties. Water Raman scattering activity is documented in clear ocean waters and algorithms proposed to evaluate water Raman scattering quantitatively. The geometry of light fields from open ocean to Case 1 coastal waters is evaluated relative to individual volume scattering functions of hydrosol components. From this information, correction factors are proposed for remote-sensing algorithms that invert the radiance-irradiance field to retrieve the backscattering coefficient.
