Creation and Modification of 1/8 degree and 1/16 degree Subtropical Gyre Atlantic Topographies

显示更多 [+] 显示较少 [-]This report describes the development of the 1/16 deg Subtropical Gyre (STG) Atlantic topography used in the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Layered Ocean Model (NLOM). This topography is a version of the Earth Topography 5-minute (ETOP05) dataset that has been modified using maps from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), the Times (London) Atlas, and personal contacts. Comparisons are made between the pure ETOP05 dataset and the modified 1/8 deg and 1/16 deg versions of the STG Atlantic topographies. Actual and model coastlines (i.e., the 200-m isobath) from the final topography are more representative of this region, especially in the passages of the Lesser Antilles. Close examination of the coastlines at 1/16 deg resolution highlighted areas at 1/8 deg resolution that needed improvements. These were retrofitted into existing 1/8 deg topographies.
