HF Groundwave Backscatter from Surface Targets (Phase B - San Clemente Island)

Measurements of surface-vessel wakes have been made with an experimental HF radar. The experimental program was conducted at San Clemente Island in deep ocean areas. The radar was provided with considerable flexibility in frequency, range and aximuth and an on-site digital processor was used to provide near real-time spectral analyses. Preliminary results indicate that wakes are clearly distinguishable from the clutter produced by a nominal sea. Examples are given. Analysis of effective wake cross-section as a function of vessel speed and size and as a function of sea conditions are proceeding.
