USS MERRIMACK (AO 179) Jumbo Post-Jumboization Standardization Trials
1992
Griggs, Douglas B.
The USS MERRIMACK (AO 179) Jumbo is the first CIMARRON Class oiler to be jumboized. A 108-ft (32.92-m) parallel middle body was added to the ship, increasing full load displacement from 27,400 long tons (27,800 t) to 36,890 long tons (37,480 t). A five-bladed propeller was installed replacing the original highly skewed seven-bladed propeller, and the rudder was enlarged. Standardization Trials were conducted on the jumboized USS MERRIMACK during the period of 11 to 14 July 1991. These trials were conducted at the Hatteras East Coast Tracking Offshore Range (HECTOR). This report presents the trial results. At heavy displacement, the maximum ship speed attained was 21.95 kn. This was accomplished with an average shaft speed of 101.3 r/min, a total shaft torque of 1,241,500 lb-ft (1,682,500 N-m), and a total shaft power of 23,940 hp (17,860 kW).
