Forsuring av havet medfører nye utfordringer for biologisk forskning

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution more than 200 years ago, fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas havebeen burned to CO2 in at a steadily increasing rate. It is well known that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has agreenhouse effect that affects the earth’s climate.Less attention has been given to the fact that inceeased concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere acidifiesseawater. Only recently the scientific community has started to realize that acidification of the ocean is a sureconsequence of increased amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere (Caldeira og Wickett 2003). It is foreseeable thatincreased concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere will make the oceans more acid (Orr et al. 2005). Currently we donot have any technology to remediate the problem. Decreasing anthropogenic release of CO2 to the atmosphere is theonly identified action that can decellerate ocean acidification. Det er vel kjent at karbondioksid i atmosfæren gir drivhuseffekt som påvirkerklimaet på jorden.En mindre påaktet konsekvens av tilførsel av CO2 til atmosfæren, er at det forsurer havet. Den fagligebevisstgjøringen omkring forsuring av havet som konsekvens av CO2-utslipp til atmos-færen har vokst fram først iløpet av de siste ti år (Caldeira og Wickett 2003). Man kan i dag fastslå og forutsi klart og konsist sammenhengenmellom CO2 utslipp til atmosfæren og forsuring av havet (Orr et al. 2005). Videre er det vist med sikkerhet at videreutslipp vil forverre problemet, og at det ikke finnes noen kjent teknologi som kan bøte på forsuringseffekten.Begrensing av utslipp av CO2 til atmosfæren er det eneste kjente tiltaket som kan virke globalt til å bremseforsuringen.
