Mutafchieva, M., Agricultural Experimental Station, Shumen (Bulgaria)
The research was conducted in the period 2006 – 2008 in Agricultural experimental station Khan Khrum, Shumen district. The analysis focused on the morphological characteristics and biological properties of the varieties Burley 420, Pliska 2002, and Preslav 2002. The Burley 21 variety was used as a standard. It was established that in terms of plant height, the new varieties outperform the standard Burley 21 by an average of 28-35 cm, and the difference is statistically proven. In terms of number of leaves on a single plant, it is proven that the varieties Pliska 2002 and Preslav 2002 develop the greatest number of leaves – an average of 2.7 – 11.1 leaves more. Burley 420 develops a number of leaves similar to that of the standard. In terms of leaf length in the middle belt 4th leaf), the varieties Pliska 2002 and Preslav 2002 are provthe standard Burley 21. The Burley 420 and Pliska 2002 varieties exceed the standard's leaf width by an average of 2.47 – 3.0 cm. It was established that the new varieties have a longer vegetation period than the standard, by approximately 8.3 – 20.3 days, and the difference is statistically proven
