A short review of the status and trends in the production of sour cherry in the world and in Bulgaria for the period 2005 – 2009 was made. Sour cherry production areas in the world increased from 235 617 to 256 492 ha 8.86%. Russian Federation rank first place in the world in 2009, followed by Serbia, Poland, Iran and Turkey – respectively 22.61%, 14.82%, 13.83%, 8.28% and 7.84%. Best trend of constant growth sour cherry areas are Iran, Turkey and Serbia, who have increased their land for 5-year period by 83.67%, 52.0% and 17.15%. The production of sour cherry fruit in the world also is tending to gradually increase with 14% - from 1 155 867 t 2005 reached to 1 317 609 t 2009. The main producing countries of sour cherry in 2009 are: Turkey 14.63%, Poland 14.36%, Russia 12.09%, USA 12.15%, Iran 8.31% and Serbia 8.0%, followed by Hungary 5.98%, Ukraine 5.31% and Belarus 4.15%. After 2005 in Bulgaria there is a known, albeit slowly increasing production sour cherry areas and their size from 2303 ha gradually increased to 3900 ha 2009 and the quantity of fruit varies from 2700 to 3958 t. -
