A treatment process of anaerobic filter (AF) plus biological aerated filter (BAF) was used. The objective was to study the effect of AF-BAF process on wastewater COD and NH3-N content. The results could provide new technology for the treatment of livestock and poultry cultivation wastewater. Wastewater from a pig farm of Benxiang group in Shaanxi Yangling was studied. COD and NH3-N removal rates were selected as determination standard. After starting the AF and BAF reactors, the optimum operational parameters were determined. Next, the AF-BAF system was operated under these optimum conditions to determine the COD and NH3-N removal rates from wastewater. The AF reactor required 89 days for start-up, whereas the BAF reactor required 25 days. The optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT) for the AF was 18 h. For the BAF, the optimum HRT was 10 h and the optimum gas to water ratio was 7. After treatment, the COD of the wastewater ranged from 190 to 340 mg/L and the NH3-N concentration ranged from 40 to 70 mg/L. On average, the treatment process removed 94.69% of the COD and 87.72% of the NH3-N. The AF-BAF process is effective for the treatment of livestock and poultry cultivation wastewater. The water quality indices of the effluent meet the Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Livestock and Poultry Breeding(GB 18596-2001).
