In a field naturally infested with weeds and soil-borne pathogen, field experiments were conducted in the vegetable farm at Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University in clay soil , to study the effect of seed-bed solarization of organic production on growth and yield of spinach plant. Well prepared and pre-irrigated seed-bed plots with and without organic manure were covered on 1st August with transparen polyethylene mulch of 50 µM thick, for six weeks prior to spinach. Sowing in early October of 2006 and 2007.Solarization for 6 weeks significantly reduced total fungi, totalò bacteria infestation and number, fresh weight of annual and perennial weeds/pot and weeds/m2 in the open field plots compared with non-solarized treatmen.Solarization improved ratio and availability of nutrient content in the soil and also improved plant growth and yield Organic fertilizer showed significant decrease in total fungi, bacteria and weeds and significat increase in spinach length, number of leaves and fresh and dry weight Vegetative growth, yield and quality of spinach were also increased by solarization with organic fertilizer over control treatment. In the field experiment of spinach, solarization and organic fertilizer showed that the treatments were technically viable and gave beneficial changes. Biofertilizer application to solarized soil improved baby leaf and mature spinach leaf growth, increased yield, and are attractive to users as environment friendly.
