Are genetically modified organisms (GMOs) relevant for use in the south? Concerns about their use include environmental impact, food safety, and control of the rapidly advancing field of biotechnology. Plant breeders have traditionally used a range of techniques to produce new varieties. GMOs, on the other hand, are the result of transferring specific genetic material between unrelated species of plant, animal, bacteria, or virus, allowing scientists to create ‘modified’ organisms having the specific characteristics of unrelated species. Research by the UK Overseas Development Institute suggests that if policy in developing countries is to address these issues effectively, current regulatory systems need to be strengthened.
