India has seen a phenomenal rise in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the last 40 years and according to WHO estimates by 2020 close to 60 percent of cardiac patients worldwide will be Indians. Globalisation, explosive urbanization, food habits and profound lifestyle changes are the likely causes of increased CVD crisis in India. Probiotics have the potential of targeting an array of diseases. Normalization of the properties of unbalanced indigenous microflora of the intestinal tract by ingestion of specific strains of the healthy microflora forms the rationale of probiotic therapy. It is now well recognized that probiotics hold great promise in the management of inflammatory metabolic disorders including cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and stroke etc. This novel strategy has opened new avenues for developing customized dairy based functional foods specifically meant for the vast Indian population suffering from one or other forms of CVDs to manage heart health. From the initial studies, it can be seen that probiotics have the prospects to act as a potent complementary strategy to manage the menace of rising epidemics of CVDs amongst the affected Indian population.
