The general aim in the breeding of cross-pollinated perennial forage has so far been to develop improved synthetic populations. Crop improvement, through plant breeding, is greatly aided by knowledge of genetic variation. This project continues the research project" Determination of general combining ability with polycross test for Azarbaijan alfalfa ecotypes". The results of mentioned project showed large variation among ecotypes indicating the success of selection among their progenies so based on general combining ability, especially for fresh and dry yield, Sattlou, Garayonje, Almard, Leghan, Baftan, Khaje, Sivan, Ilan jouj, Dizaj Safar Ali, Khosrovang and Garababa ecotypes were selected as parents for developing synthetic variety. A Latin square design was used with 11 replications to insure the random mating in the polycross nursery. They were planted at East Azarbaijan Agriculture and Natural Research Center in 2008. The first year was considered for uniformity and seed produced for two years later and honeybees used in polycross nursery. Pollination was done under a completely isolation condition, and thus synthetic seed (Syn1) was produced.
