This article is based on a research which is aimed to clarify the role and effect of strategic impact assessment on the environment in the planning processes of rural municipalities in Latvia. The main research method used in the research was interviewing authority bodies of rural municipalities; however, analysis of planning documents was also carried out, and the author's own experience with drawing strategic assessments has also been taken into account. The results of interviews demonstrate that none of the analysed municipal territories could give evidence that the strategic assessment had helped to prevent or reduce a possible negative impact of the territorial planning upon the environment.
