Properties of the culm sheaths of Dendrocalamus asper (Schult and Schult f.) Backer ex Heyne from three sites in the Philippines

Culm sheaths of Dendrocalamus asper collected from stands in Baguio City, Benguet, Makiling, Laguna and Lipa, Batangas [Philippines] were studied to characterize and determine the anatomic, chemical, and physical properties which are relevant to their potential end-use. There was a highly significant difference in both the area and weight of the culm sheaths; the Baguio samples were larger and heavier. Investigation of the fiber dimensions revealed a significant wider diameter of the fiber of the Baguio samples. The chemical constituents of the culm sheath were found to be close to the values obtained from the culm, as reported in the literature, except for a highly significant increase in the hot water extractives of the Lipa sample, which indicates a high soluble inorganic content. This, together with a high % lignin and a low % holocellulose, suggests a low fiber content or pulp yield. The Baguio samples also revealed higher values for volume and density and larger vascular bundle diameter. Coupled with its larger size and weight, these suggest more vigorous growth. It can be concluded then that Baguio presents a favorable site for the growth of D. asper. Lamination of the culm sheath panels using isocynate and polyvinylacetate glues had a 100% adhesion rate, with no sites of failure or loss of sheen. This confirms the potential use of the culm sheaths as a laminated panel for decorative use.
