Isolation and biological evaluation of metabolites from species of the genus Laurencia: Laurencia glandulifera

In the last three decades, the discovery of metabolites with biological activities from marine algae has increased significantly due to the production of interesting halogenated secondary metabolites. Red algae of the genus Laurencia (Rhodomelaceae) are a rich source of halogenated sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, and non-terpenoid C15 acetylenic ethers. In connection with the ongoing research on the constituents of the red algae genus Laurencia from the Greek coast, the present study primarily reported the isolation and structure elucidation of some secondary metabolites. The second aim was to examine the levels of antioxidant activity of the extracts of Laurencia glandulifera, a Laurencia species from the Greek coast. Antioxidative activity was measured using the 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) solution for free radical scavenging activity and Co-EDTA luminol chemiluminescence assay for hydroxyl free radical scavenging activity. The results showed that Laurencia glandulifera contains a variety of metabolites, belonging mostly to the family of C15 acetogenins. The GC-MS /NMR analysis showed that Laurencia glandulifera contains: Intricenyne, Rogioloxepane (A), Compound 2d and 2b which had already been isolated from other sources of Laurencia species, while the main acetogenin compound, Laurencin, reported from this species in previous studies (Irie et al., 1965 a, 1968 c) was not present.
