Development of lightweight oil palm kernel shell block for enhancing heat gain reduction through buildings

Buildings in a hot-humid climate always confront with problems from outdoor heat that is transferred through the buildings. Reducing heat gains through the buildings will reduces cooling loads of air conditioning. This research emphasizes on the use of oil palm ashes and oil palm kernel shells, which are waste materials from agricultural industry processes to improve the qualities of concrete block to be light-weighted and have high efficiency in reducing heat entering buildings. The process of sample block molding will be used and the results of this research will be compared with the standard of hollow non-load-bearing concrete masonry units according to TIS 58-2530. The analysis of the results found that concrete blocks containing oil palm ashes and oil palm kernel shells with the ratio of cement to oil palm ash to oil palm kernel shell as 0.3:0.7:1 could support compressive strength at 48.458 KSC which is higher than that of TIS 58-2530. Moreover, the results of testing concrete blocks containing oil palm ashes and oil palm kernel shells with the previous ratio (0.3:0.7:1) varying water from 26-38 percent of cement and oil palm ash showed that the concrete block with 30 percent of water could reach compressive strength standard (TIS 58-2530) with the lowest weight of 1.412 kg and thermal conductivity (k Value) of 0.221 W/m*K, which are lower than the standard of normal concrete. Therefore, from the preliminary results, there is high potential to develop lightweight concrete blocks that can reduce heat gains through buildings.
