Impacts and aquaculture farmers adaptation on coastal erosion: A case study of vannamie white shrimp farmers in Pak Phanang, Nakhon Si Thammarat province

Study of location, number and area of vannamie white shrimp ponds in Pak Phanang district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province located between highway no. 4231 and 4031 and the coastal line, which might be effected from coastal erosion at a rate of 10 m./year using geography information system, found that during the period of 2005-2015 about 11.95 percent of number of shrimp ponds and 14.09 percent of farm's area would be affected, and accumulated production loss would be accounted for 384.2 million Baht. The total of 31 farmers who operate shrimp farm located close to zone the coastal were interviewed using questionnaire and in-depth interview was conducted with 13 farmers via focus group. The results showed that 90.3 percent of interviewed famers faced of coastal erosion problem and 60.71 percent of them indicated that their farm areas have erosion. Only 51.6 percent of farmers have adaptated to protect and alter their farms from the coastal erosion.
