Effect of seasonal variations on the oxidant antioxidant status and biochemical constituents of two leech species, barbronia assiut and salifa delicata from Egypt

The measurements of the whole body weight comprised lipid peroxidation (LPO), total peroxide (TP) (oxidative stress), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) (antioxidants), total protein (TPr), total lipids (TL) and carbohydrates (chemical composition). Histological studies were used to determine numbers of testisacs and stages of both testisacs and ovisacs. The results showed seasonal variations in the levels of all tested parameters in B. assiuti and in most of these parameters in S. delicata during seasons (2005 -2006). In addition, there were significant differences in most tested parameters among groups of sampling dates (2005 vs. 2006) in both B. assiuti and S delicata. GSH and TL levels (2005-2006) showed significant differences between the two species. The high activity of spermatogenesis observed mostly in summer in both species may relate to the rise in the oxidative stress parameters. The changes occurred in antioxidant levels (GSH and SOD activity) may be urged by the rise in the oxidative stress. In addition, the high body lipid content in summer is probably related to the high demand of energy during active spermatogenesis. In conclusion, the availability of food, water temperature, metabolic rates, activity of spermatogenesis and day length may be the main causes of seasonal variations in oxidant/antioxidant status and in biochemical parameters of the two studied species.
