Les cultures transgéniques tolérantes à un herbicide permettent-elles de réduire l’usage des pesticides ? Le cas du soja et du maïs aux Etats-Unis

Les cultures transgéniques tolérantes à un herbicide (TH), actuellement largement prédominantes parmi les OGM, ont fait l’objet de nombreuses critiques notamment en raison de leur emploi concomitant d’herbicides. Mais celui-ci est-il similaire, plus ou moins élevé qu’en cultures conventionnelles ? L’article présente en premier lieu l’importance des cultures transgéniques TH dans le monde ainsi que dans les essais au champ aux Etats-Unis. Puis à partir du cas du soja tolérant au glyphosate, il examine les facteurs d’adoption de cette culture aux Etats-Unis où elle est très largement implantée, les avantages et les inconvénients au niveau agro-économique. Dans un troisième temps on étudie l’emploi des herbicides sur deux cultures transgéniques par comparaison aux conventionnelles, le soja et le maïs, ainsi que l’évolution des consommations d’herbicides sur l’ensemble de la culture au fil du temps après avoir signalé les problèmes de sources et de méthodes rencontrés. Dans le cas du soja, la culture transgénique consomme un peu plus d’herbicides que le soja conventionnel, mais c’est l’inverse pour le maïs TH qui emploie moins d’herbicides que le conventionnel. Cependant d’autres facteurs que l’utilisation d’une variété transgénique entrent en jeu, notamment les évolutions de prix des différents herbicides et les changements concomitants des techniques de culture. En dernier lieu on aborde les incidences environnementales de l’adoption des cultures transgéniques. On note une diminution de la toxicité des herbicides utilisés pour le soja et le maïs transgénique. Mais aussi l’apparition d’adventices tolérantes au glyphosate vu la très forte utilisation de ce dernier en remplacement des herbicides utilisés naguère. La conclusion souligne que ce qu’on qualifie d’impacts des OGM relève en fait largement des impacts du système économique dominant.

Transgenic herbicide tolerant (HT) crops, the most prevalent of the GM crops used throughout the world, have been strongly criticized, in particular because of the use of herbicides associated with them. However, to what extent is the use of herbicides in the case of HT crops similar to the case of conventional crops? This paper presents the importance of HT transgenic crops in the world and then more specifically in field trials in the USA. Secondly, based on the case of glyphosate-tolerant soybean, we examine the factors of adoption of this crop in the USA, where it is widely cultivated, as well as its advantages and disadvantages at the agro-economic level. Thirdly, the problems involving statistical sources and methods are explained. The use of herbicides in the field is studied in the case of two transgenic crops, soybean and corn, compared to the use of herbicides in the case of conventional crops. We also delve into changes in herbicide use in terms of the entire crop over time. In the case of soybean, farmers use a little more herbicide than in the case of conventional soybeans, but the opposite is true for HT corn for which farmers use less herbicide than for conventional corn. However, other factors than the use of a transgenic variety come into play, notably changes in the prices of variousherbicides and concurrent changes in cultural practices. Finally, we address the environmental impact of the adoption of transgenic crops. There has been a decrease in the toxicity of herbicides used for soybean and corn, but as well the emergence of weeds tolerant to glyphosate because of the high use of the latter replacing previously used herbicides. The conclusion emphasizes that what is qualified as "the impacts of GMOs" is in fact largely the result of the overall effects of the economic system: the governance of innovation is more at stake than the innovation itself.
