Identification and registration of total existing cultivars and genotypes of a plant species including date palm in Iran, is a quite important and fundamental activity in precise recognition of the existing actual genetic diversity and breeding potential for selecting and/ or creating favorable and superior genotypes and also to guaranty the ownership of native cultivars and genotypes for the country. In this project, 10 superior and commercial Iranian date cultivars were studied based on the national guideline for the conduct of tests for distinctness, uniformity and stability in date palm (DUS) through recording 54 morphological and physiological characteristics in 5 palms of each cultivar for two years. The cultivars and their place of study were, Istamaran, Barhi, Gantar and Dayri in khouzestan, Shahani and Piarom in Fars, Kabkab and Zahidi in Boushehr, mozafati in Kerman and Rabbi in Balouchestan provinces. Data of quantitative characteritics were analyzed as a 2-year compound analysis of variance and the means of characteristics compared between cultivars using Duncans' multiple range test (á = 0.05). A review on states of expression of qualitative characteristics of these cultivars and then calculation of similarity coefficient and cluster analysis between cultivars were also conducted. The results showed that all quantitative characteristics (40 characteristics) and most of qualitative characteristics (9 characteristics) having at least two distinct statistical classes or states of expression between studied date cultivars, are able to separate these cultivars well. For a comprehensive and detailed identification of these cultivars based on morphological and physiological characteristics, a description of each cultivar using all studied quantitative and qualitative characteristics and finally, for a simple and rapid identification and separation of these cultivars, an identification key using 9 distinctive characteristics were presented. The identified commercial date cultivars were introduced to seed and plant registration and certification research institute of Iran for being registered and for preparing mother gardens.
