Response of sugar beet commercial varieties to rhizomania disease under field conditions

Rhizomania is one of the most destructive diseases of sugar beet which leads to severe losses in root yield and sugar content. This disease could be effectively controlled by using disease resistant varieties. In this research, some foreign and domestic sugar beet commercial varieties were evaluated as two 25-variety experiments in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates in three naturally infected locations (Mahsad, Shiraz and Naghadeh) in 2011. In each experiment, yield and quality characteristics were measured in addition to disease resistance assessement. After data analysis and comparison of sugar yield and resistance, the varieties suitable for each location were identified. In Mashad, the varieties F-20755, F-20739 , F-20767, F-20771 and F-20723 showed significantly higher white sugar yield, sugar content, white sugar content and purity than the mean of resistant checks. The disease scores of these varieties, especially F-20721 and F-20739 had the least disease score. In the trial no 122690 of Shiraz, none of the varieties were superior to the mean of checks in root yield and sugar yield but the varieties F-20755, F-20739, F-20767, F-20771 and F-20723 were significantly superior to the mean of checks in terms of root quality characters. In the trial no 122790 of Shiraz, all varieties except F-20777 and F-20776 were significantly superior to the mean of checks with respect to yield and quality. In Naghadeh, none of the varieties were significantly higher than the mean of checks but the varieties F-20739 and F-20783 had the lowest disease score. In general, the varieties F-20721, F-20783 and F-20739 were superior to the mean of checks across the three locations.
