Advanced study for estimation of yield loss due to weeds in corn fields

In order to achieve accurate, reliable and scientific information about yield loss due to weeds in corn fields of Iran and study the role of weeds as an effective factor on corn production, a study was conducted in corn fields of Qazvin, Hamadan, Kermanshah and Ardebil provinces during 2010. In this study totally from four provinces, 80 corn fields based on stratified sampling method and proportional allocation of samples in each class was selected. Sampling in the each fields for infected and non infected parts was conducted. Results showed that the weed density model in four regions could estimate well the yield loss due weeds. Average yield loss from weeds in corn fields of Qazvin, Hamadan, Kermanshah and Ardebil provinces was 13.24%, 16.65%, 17.32%, and 16.30% respectively, and the average yield loss due to weeds in corn fields of Iran, 15% was estimated. According to the researchers idea, if ignore 5% reduction in corn fields in the presence of weeds as the threshold damage, based on published statistics and considering the price of 4,500 rials per kilogram of corn grain, about 740 billion rials damage in corn fields of Iran due to weed interference, was conducted.
