Effect of Nitrogen and Phosphorus amount on Bloom Attributes and Production of Azarshar red Onion

In order to study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers on seed yield of Azarshahr red onion, a split plot experiment, based on randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted at Agriculture and Natural Resources Research Center, East Azarbaijan Province in 2009. In this study, four levels of nitrogen, (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg/ha) in main plots and four levels of phosphorus (0, 67.5, 90 and 112.5 kg/ha) in sub plots were studied. Analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences between levels of nitrogen in seed yield per plant, diameter of the umbel, the percentage of potassium and nitrogen in leaves and the number of flowers per umbel, whereas for traits viz. days to flowering, number of flower stalks per plant, 1000 kernel weight, germination percentage, seed potassium percentage, seed phosphorous percentage, seed nitrogen percentage, leaves phosphorous percentage showed no significant difference. Between phosphorus levels there were significant differences in seed yield per plant, number of flowers per umbel, the percentage of leaves potassium, nitrogen and phosphorous but other traits have not significant differences. Phosphorus and nitrogen interaction was significant for leaf nitrogen percentage only. The results showed that onion seed yield per plant, umbel diameter and number of flowers per umbel increased with application of 150 kg urea per hectare. The application of 90 kg / ha P2O5 increased seed yield per plant and number of flowers per umbel. Key words: Allium cepa L., days to flowering, flower stalks per plant, Umbel diameter.
