Preliminary evaluation of winter safflower lines for oil and seed yield and other agronomic traits under rain fed conditions in semi-cold area.

To study the agronomical and morphological characteristics in 49 safflower genotypes, a lattice experiment 7 Ã 7 with two replications was conducted in Dry - land Agricultural Research Station, Sararood, Kermanshah in 2008-09 (fall planting). Quantitative and qualitative traits including flower colour, spine and spineless, days to start of flowering (DSF) , days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), number of secondary branches per plant (SB), number of heads per plant (H / P) , number of seeds per head (S / H), thousand kernal weight (TKW), oil content (OIL), and Seed yield (SY) were measured. Analysis of variance showed that safflower genotypes were significant for all of the studied characteristics. Lines PI 250202, PI 262438, PI 306974, PI 576980 and PI 576991 had the lowest DSF and DM. The highest % OIL was related to lines PI 306599, PI 253520 and PI 250833 (32.08, 30.88, and 30.10 % respectively). The highest seed yield belonged to lines PI 576980, PI 250533 and PI 306599 (678, 606 and 592 Kg/ha, respectively). Therefore, Line PI 306599 had high levels to % OIL and SY. Mean and variation range were for DM and % OIL 256.43 and 252.96 - 260.14 days, 26.7 and 22.49 - 32.09 %, respectively. Highest standard deviation of traits was obtained for SY (98.65) and lowest for SB (0.49). The correlation coefficients between SY and DSF, and also with DM were negatively significant that indicated late-maturing genotypes have low SY. S / H positively correlated with SY. No relation observed between % OIL and SY. Thus, selection will have to be conducted separately for each trait.
