Evaluation of resistance of sugar beet commercial varieties to rhizomania disease

Rhizomania is one of the most destructive diseases of sugar beet which leads to severe losses in root yield and sugar content. This disease could be effectively controlled by using disease resistant varieties. In this research, some foreign and domestic sugar beet commercial varieties were evaluated as a 25-variety and 36-variety experiments in a randomized complete block design with 3 replicates in three naturally infected locations (Mahsad, Naghadeh and Shiraz) in 2010. In each experiment, yield and quality characteristics were measured in addition to disease resistance assessement. After data analysis and comparison of sugar yield and resistance, the varieties suitable for each location were identified. In Mashad, the varieties F-20701, F-20704 and F-20723 produced significantly higher white sugar yield than the mean of resistant checks. The disease scores of these varieties were less than 2 in 1-9 scale. In Shiraz, non of the varieties were superior to the mean of checks in root yield and sugar yield but the varieties F-20754, F- 20739, F-20719, F-20720, F-20745, F-20700, F-20699, F-20734, F-20726 and F-20742 were significantly superior to the mean of checks in terms of root quality characters. The disease scores of these varieties were similar to those of checks. In Naghadeh, the root yield and sugar yield of the varieties F-20729, F-20709 and F-20752 were significantly higher than the mean of checks. These varieties gained the lowest disease score (1) as well.
