Kraft pulping of E.camaldulensis harvested in short rotation period
2006
Mahdavi, Saeed
In this study, four E.camaldulensis trees which had 5 years old were cut from Gonbad countyside's. Height of trees (HT), diameter of breast height (DBH) and wet weight of logs were measured for each tree. Then fiber length, density and content of chemical components were determined using test methods. Kraft pulps were prepared by rotary and circulation digesters and pulps refined to achieve 400 ml.csf freeness using PFI-Mill beater. The means of HT and DBH were measured at 1400 and 16.5 cm respectively. This tree located in short fiber trees class based on the fiber length mean (0.85mm). Wood density, lignin and extractives are relatively high, so there are problems on kraft pulping from the species. Screen yield and kappa no. ranges were determined at 44% to 49% and 13.5 to 85 respectively. Handsheet strengths significantly improved by adding 10% and 15% long fiber of softwood for unbleached and bleached kraft liner. In overall, pulp and paper characteristics of E.camaldulensis excluding charge of color effluent are acceptable.
