Collection characterization and evaluation of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) genetic recourses

Collecting for cultivated safflower and its wild relatives were done based on different areas of cultivation and distribution of wild species in Iran. A total of 201 seed and herbarium samples from the different species of Carthamus, such as C. tinctorius, and C. oxyacantha were collected. Evaluation of morphological and physiological characters was done visually. Results showed that in addition to morphological differences C. oxyacantha species had longer rosette duration than cultivated species. In this species, there was positive significant correlation among 1000- seed weight with rosette duration, days to emergence of 50% seedlings, and fruit diameter. In the cultivated species these relationships were similar, except days to 50% flowering. Multiple regression (step-wise) for 1000-seed weight as dependent character and other variable characters in C. oxyacantha showed that rosette duration, angle of branches, diameter of boll, seed size and seed shape were incorporated in the equation. In C. tinctorius species multiple regression showed, that number of spines on bract, location of the spines and thickness of seed coat were incorporated in the variation of 1000-seed weight.
