Evaluation reaction of dryland wheat advanced lines and cultivars selected from cereal trials 1389-90 (Warm and cold regions) to dwarf bunt caused by Tilletia controversa Kuhn in dryland areas

Bunts are one of the most important diseases of wheat and dwarf bunt with causing agent (Tilletia controversa Kuhn) is one of the destructive diseases of wheat in dryland areas with high elevation and snow cover in winter. In order to evaluate resistance of wheat-advanced lines and cultivars to dwarf bunt, 260 wheat genotypes and 2 Triticale, this experiment was carried out in Maragheh and Kordestan in 2010 and 2011 cropping seasons. Eight grams of genotypes were artificially inoculated with spores of related local isolates in ratio of 0.010. Seeds were planted in 2 rows, with one-meter length. At harvesting time, the numbers of infected spikes was assessed for each genotype. Because of non favorable conditions for disease development, (winter without snow cover), no incidence of dwarf bunt diseases were observed in Maragheh and Kordestan research stations in 2010-2011 cropping season. Since, virulence of dwarf bunt and common bunt fungi is regulated in wheat by the same resistance gene(s), a cultivar that is resistant to a race of common bunt will also be resistant to a race of dwarf bunt that has the same or fewer virulence genes. So, the selection of genotypes carried out based on their reaction to common bunt in the same year, and scored by Mamluk and Van Slageren methods. Results of these cultivars reaction's to common bunt at Maragheh and Kordestan research stations in 2010-2011, identified 135 genotypes with infection between 0-5% were resistant (R). Because of non favorable conditions for disease development, the results are not reliable, and the experiment should be repeated.
