Commercial intensive animal production is based on utilizing complete compounded feeds. In this system all necessary feed ingredients are ground to a similar size and blended evenly in mixer. Non-commercial producers may use these feeds, but many supply their poultry with onlya few ingredients in their natural unground state and allow the birds to chose their own diet from their environment. A comparison of the costs of the two systems of poultry feeding shows that there are considerable savings in offering modified whole grain free choice diets to all birds whether they are in cages or on the ground.
