Weight reduction of foetuses of Toxoplasma gondii-infected mice

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Toxoplasma gondii infection on the weight of mice foetuses. Twenty pregnant Swiss mice were divided into 2 groups. Mice in Group 1 were not infected (control), while Group II were infected with 1x 10 3 tachyzoites by intraperitoneal route at the third week of gestation period. Four days post infection, mice were sacrificed and foetuses were removed to observe for number and weight of foetuses. The data were analyzed by student t- test. In comparison with uninfected mice, the number of foetuses was not different (p >0.01), but the weight of foetuses was significantly reduced in infected mice (p < 0.01). Mean weight of the foetuses in Toxoplasma gondii-infected and uninfected mice was 1.13 g and 1.59 g respectively. This study concluded that Toxoplasma gandii infection causes weight reduction of foetuses.
