In this study, actinomycetes were isolated from collected samples in an expedition to Paya Maga, located at Ulu Trusan, Lawas, Sarawak. A total of 20 soils and 15 plant samples were collected from three different habitats: waterfall, cave and forests. 51 actinomycetes strains were isolated. The majority was derived from soil samples which contributed 45 strains while the remaining 6 strains were isolated from plant samples. Among the 45 actinomycetes strains isolated from soil, 18 and 2 strains were collected from waterfall and cave habitats respectively, while the remaining 25 strains were isolated from forest at various elevations. For diversity study and species classification, 16S ribosomal DNA were sequenced and compared to Gen Bank using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The results showed that the isolates are classified into four families: Streptomycetaceae, Pseudonocardiaceae, Streptosporangiaceae and Nocardiaceae. 51 % (26 strains) of the isolates showed < 98% maximum identity to deposit Gene bank sequences and could be classified to the genus level only. These strains could be characterized and screened for novel compounds and bioactivities.
